Baba Ramdev: India's campaigning guru battles corruption bbcnews.com

By Mark Dummett, BBC News, Haridwar The key to healthy living, according to Baba Ramdev, is knowing how to breathe. It is a simple message that has won the yoga teacher, or guru, from a poor north Indian background, fame, fortune, an extraordinary self-confidence, his very own Scottish island, and a platform for some strong and controversial opinions. He has now embarked on a campaign against corruption, the big issue in India at the moment, and he says he will launch his own political movement in June to contest the next election. He may not stand much of a chance of actually winning anything, but as I discovered on my trip to his headquarters near the Hindu holy town of Haridwar, he is not a man to ignore. He claims to keep no personal wealth for himself, but the organisation he runs is hugely rich. Baba Ramdev's base, immaculately clean, decorated with ornamental trees and filled with piped religious chanting, is spread over 500 acres. It is home to a university, a...

Inspiring article by Sri Ravi Shankar

Things not to mention in your resume HT 231210

You might be a self-motivated worker and even a team player, but writing these on your resume does more harm than good to your chances of getting a job. There are five popular catch phrases that should never make it into your resume, reports CBS News . Talking on The Early Show on Saturday Morning , career adviser Liz Ryan, CEO of AskLizRyan.com , spotlighted the things you shouldn't call yourself on a resume - at least, not without backing up the description with concrete examples. In fact, she said that those examples could speak for themselves, without your actually using the terms you should avoid. Ryan said that the underlying idea in writing a resume is to stand out, and using terms everyone else does hardly accomplishes that. Revealing some of the typical or cliche phrases used in resumes, Ryan said: "'Results oriented professional' is probably the biggest one used, and it's meaningless! You're talking about yourself, so why go into this weird robo...

Overseas students better at English than Britons TOI 4 October, 2009

PTI 4 October 2009, 05:01pm IST LONDON: Believe it or not, overseas students are better at English than their British counterparts. A new study by Queen's English Society has revealed that British undergraduates make three times as many grammatical, punctuation and spelling mistakes in English than those from the overseas. Researchers have based their findings on an analysis of the written work produced in the year by final-year students. The study covered 28 final-year undergraduates' work -- 18 of them British and 10 from overseas (five Singaporeans, four Chinese and one Indonesian). The study found on average Britons had 52.2 punctuation, grammatical and spelling errors per paper as compared to just 18.8 for the international students, leading British newspaper 'The Independent' reported. Spelling errors included "flourescence" for "fluorescence", "alot" for "a lot", "seperate" for "separate", "y...

The Sound of Solace SLS Class Material Present Tense (TOI 030709)

MASHA HASSAN, Speaking Tree, The Times of India   The vibrating strains of Azaan always have an enchanting effect on me; they resonate in my mind, filling my soul as well as the atmosphere with their sound of solace . I don't offer namaz (being too young for it). Yet, the prayer makes me feel like surrendering myself submitting to the spirit of Islam that stands for peace and purity, humility and discipline. The term 'submission to God' is a deep and divine term when it is followed in true spirit. We are not expected to visualise God but to worship Him and adore Him as a Protector. I wake up everyday, my eyes opening to the serene sound of the Azaan, every word finding its way into my consciousness as the new day dawns with the promise of a new beginning. I don't know Arabic, but the words and their impact are so evocative that it is easy to recognise and submit to the One Power that protects and guides us, and surrender and submission to the Almighty is but an exp...
